Review: A History of God by Karen Armstrong A History of God This is a very information-rich book. This will not be an ascent to a reality outside ourselves, however, but a descent into the deepest recesses of the mind. The Quran never said that. What is said in the Quran is that Satan will not only not be forgiven, he is the fuel of Hell. Armstrong traces the development in all three religious traditions of the idea of a personal God, but cautions that the idea of a personal God leads some believers in all three faiths to condemn and judge those who do not conform to their beliefs. A very good read. It demands much attention and several rereads. This is a phenomenal book. There is a sense of lightness to Armstrong’s exploration of the concept of god which contrasts with the heaviness of the topic. Things came full circle when a friend who happens to follow my reviews asked me ‘You didn’t much want to write a review for this book, did you ?’ and that made me want to attempt a review for this book once again and so here goes : First of all, this book's title is misleading. The most comprehensive, exhaustive, and fascinating study of the Abrahamic religions and how they have changed over a few thousand years. It has completely opened my mind about how religion works in the world. Here are a few of my favorite quotes from the book: “Effectiveness rather than philosophical or historical demonstration has always been the hallmark of a successful religion.” I cannot really recommend this book, only because the author struggles with the enormous weight of the subject and simply tries to cover too much and ends up short-changing most ideas ... there were parts that were illuminating and interesting, but most of the text was cumbersome .. But two months later, I somehow managed to get to the end. 4.4 out of 5 stars. My transcript of the program from the DVD is just 30 pages -- a tribute to the incredible writing and editing by talent people who produced this program. New books! One of Britain's foremost commentators on religious affairs, Armstrong traces the history of how men and women have perceived and experienced God, from the time of Abraham to the present. Books like this are part of the reason why so many non-academics have such a poor understanding of the history of religion in the world, and do little more than contribute to the cloud of misinformation which surrounds the field. New this month: Scandal rocks an elite British boarding school in The Divines. A History of God ; The binding of Isaac. To find the underlying truth I still plan to though, but not in one sitting. a product of the imagination. The history of the invention of the Abrahamic god. merely possible. Season 1 Review: There’s a kind of joke built into the series, which makes effective use of his sonorous voice and easy-but-earnest style. Simple in its argument, complex in the array of detail marshalled to tell Armstrong's story. In today’s day and age of tough editors and sound bits, you wouldn’t be allowed to do that. I've read this about 3 times. It helps us understand one another better and especially helps believers understand the way secularly minded people view religion.
